In November 2015, for the third time, a team of 9 travelled to the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, to take part in the Great Ethiopian Run in aid of Orbis Ireland. Orbis gives communities across the world access to quality eye care, transforming lives and restoring vision for those who need it most.
A lively fundraising campaign which was supported so generously by our sponsors, colleagues, friends and family saw the team raise a grand total of €35,760, with all funds raised going directly to Orbis.
With the funds raised all that remained was to train up for the race ahead! The Great Ethiopian Run is Africa’s biggest road race with over 45,000 participants partaking in the madness! Addis Ababa lies at an altitude of almost 8,000 feet which combined with blistering sun, steep inclines and large crowds made for an interesting run indeed! Despite the challenges that the team faced it cannot be denied that it was an opportunity not to be missed. The race day is a spectacle which can only be seen to be believed.
Following their stay in Addis Ababa, a group of 7 travelled to Southern Ethiopian city of Arba Minch. From there, the Avolon team was given the opportunity to visit the areas where Orbis is working directly to eliminate trachoma. The Southern Ethiopia trip included visiting schools where Orbis educates children of every age about the importance of sanitation, seeing the wells that Orbis has helped communities install to encourage facial cleanliness, and the opportunity to witness a trachoma surgery. These trachoma surgeries, costing as little as €6, change the lives of entire families every day. It was a truly humbling experience to see the vast difference the funds raised will make for the lives of many in some of Ethiopia’s most impoverished regions.
The Avolon Team would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our sponsors for their continued support of Orbis and the amazing work they do.
A special thanks to our corporate sponsors for their generous donations:
