2016 Progress Report
Each year we set ourselves targets to meet our objectives in each of the four CARE pillars. Set out below is our progress in each category:

On Monday 23 October, the Dublin International Piano Competition (DIPC) hosted an Anniversary Gala Dinner in the Grafton Suite of the Westbury Hotel to mark the 30th anniversary of the competition. The DIPC is one of the most prestigious and high profile competitions for aspiring pianists around the world. Avolon supported fundraising evenings for the event which has ensured the continuation of the competition.
On 13 October, Avolon took part in Focus Ireland’s Shine a Light Night for the second year with 21 staff members sleeping rough to raise vital funds for homeless people and to stand in solidarity with people experiencing homelessness in Ireland today.
On 11 October 2017, the annual Irish Aviation Students’ Association [IASA] symposium took place in Dublin. Avolon, under the CARE pillar of Education and Entrepreneurship, was a platinum sponsor of the event.
On 2 September 2017, a team of Avolon employees took part in the annual Sporting Proud Triathlon in Brittas Bay, Co. Wicklow. This event is affiliated with several charities, including the Jigsaw Centre, for which Avolon raised €7,100.
Avolon partnered up with Rise Against Hunger in September to pack and distribute meals for children and disaster relief efforts. The event, which took place in the Livingston office and organised by Karen Worthington, brought 40 Avolon staff members together for two hours to package 10,152 meals in an assembly line. Avolon contributed a further €10,000 to the Maureen Smithwick Academic Scholarship Bursary in September to provide funding towards their academic scholarship programme in Trinity Comprehensive, Ballymun.
On 28 July 2017, Avolon participated in the Apollo Aviation Fight Fest Football Tournament in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland. The seven-a-side tournament was organised by Apollo and 13 players from Avolon took part, raising €1,000 for the charity.
On a wet Saturday morning in April, 10, a collection of brave TRIBE members made their way out to Blessington Lake in County Wicklow to participate in the 13th annual Ronald McDonald House Charity cycle.
Avolon was delighted to provide funding to the An Cosán Virtual Community College “VCC” as they take the next step towards scaling the impact of VCC globally and to ensure learners can access a high quality social action model of education.
Avolon recently became a business patron to TPCID, donating €10k per year for the next 3 years and working with the centre to create opportunities for students and graduates to grow in confidence and to develop essential workplace skills through work placements and internships.
As part of its ongoing support of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) – we held the second instalment of the Avolon Youthreach Programme, a daylong workshop designed to inspire artistic creativity among early school leavers in Ireland.
On 26 May, Avolon’s CARE Committee teed off at the annual Golf Classic to support the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (RCC).
For Comic Relief this year, Avolon’s Linvingston office arranged a “Jeans Day” fundraising event to support Red Nose Day on 25 May. For a $5 donation, employees were able to wear jeans to the office for the day.
South American artist Adriana Salazar was selected as the first winner of Avolon’s Global Studio Award, a six-month residency at Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA).
On Friday 14 April, 27 brave participants gathered at Dalkey Quarry to abseil for Temple Street Children’s Hospital Foundation. The 100ft abseil was organised by Shane O’Donovan to raise as much as possible for the hospital.
Avolon recently participated in an Aviation Awareness Module for a small group of local 4th Year Transition Students from Blackrock College, Dublin.
Avolon is sponsoring 12 high-school students in Kenya this year to attend secondary school. Avolon has donated €7660 to Sponsor an African Scholar (SAAS), an Ireland-based charity that aims to enable disadvantaged children in Mombasa, to obtain secondary school education.
On Sunday 20th of November a team of Avolon employees completed a 10km run along the Clontarf coast in aid of Vita.
On 13 November, 2016, Lynn Guiney and Steven Graham ran the Athens Marathon in support of the Irish Cancer Society to help raise awareness and support this fantastic charity.
Avolon has made a contribution to TASC Madagascar to help build a rural school in Salohy, Madagascar.
On 3rd November 2016 Avolon and Clifford Chance hosted their sixth event in Hong Kong in aid of ORBIS. The charity is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of blindness in the developing world. With over 120 people in attendance, the event raised circa US$110,000 which will be donated to the charity’s Ethiopian project. Avolon would like to thank ORBIS, its co-sponsors and all our guests for their support of this worthy cause.
On Friday October 21st, ten staff from Avolon spent the night outside to raise awareness and funds for Focus Ireland as part of its Shine a Light Night.
Avolon is proud to continually support the Dublin International Piano Competition (DIPC) which hosts one of the most important piano competitions in the world and also supports young Irish pianists to develop their talents to perform and compete on the world stage.
The 2016 Paralympics was a resounding success for the Irish Paralympic team of 48 athletes, who travelled out to Rio earlier this month for the 15th Summer Paralympic Games.
On the 13th of September a team of over 100 Avolon employees stepped away from their desks for the day to partake in the second annual Avolon Care Day. Staff travelled far and wide with all our colleagues based in Hong Kong, New York, Singapore and China coming to Dublin especially for the day.
Avolon continued their support of the I.F.S.C. Dublin Inner City Trust by sponsoring their Annual Golf Outing which took place on September 5, 2016.
On Saturday 3rd September, 10 Avolon staff members travelled to Brittas Bay, Co. Wicklow to participate in the annual Sporting Proud Triathlon.
With sponsorship support from Avolon, Sean O’Connor, age 15, of NDSL travelled to Derry in July 2016 to play and partake in the prestigious Supercup Northern Ireland (NI) 2016.
Avolon contributes €1,000 towards Gareth Leslie’s El Camino walk for Make-a-Wish Ireland. The Donegal man and local fisherman, walked over 800km’s in less than a month from St Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago in Spain, raising over €20,000 for the Make-a-Wish Ireland organisation.
Avolon was represented at the Annual Dublin Pride Parade on Saturday 25 June by TRIBE members and their friends and families.
For the European Championships, Avolon staff organised a European Championship sweepstake. Funds raised for the sweepstakes went to the Vita organisation.
Avolon launched its first Blood Donation drive, with four of our staff members making the trip out to Stillorgan’s Blood Donation Clinic over their lunch break.
Cerebral Palsy Lanka Foundation (CPLF) was started with the objective of providing educational and therapeutic services. The organisation has two resource centres that offer much-needed education and therapy.
On 21 April, members of Avolon participated in the Orbis Ireland Golf Classic. The event which took place at Powerscourt Golf Club saw various teams tee off and compete for a four ball champagne scramble.
On April 15th, the Avolon Hong Kong office held a bake sale in aid of Food Angel Hong Kong raising €2,000 for the charity that rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste.
On April 15, the Avolon TRIBE cranked up their ovens and got baking and eating for the Great Irish Bake in support of the Temple Street Foundation. Working their way through a variety of cakes, cookies and other homemade treats, the Dublin office raised €2,000 for Temple Street.
The MSc in Aviation Finance, the first of its kind in Europe, was developed jointly by UCD and various industry partners including Avolon, AerCap, GECAS, KPMG, SMBC and Snecma (Safran).
On an overcast Saturday morning in April, 9 members of the Avolon TRIBE and a few friends travelled to Blessington Lake in County Wicklow to participate in the 12th annual Ronald McDonald House Charity Cycle.

Avolon continued its support to An Cosán this year by sponsoring a table at its annual International Women’s Day luncheon which took place on 4th March at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin.
Avolon entered three teams in the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (“DRCC”) Annual Corporate Quiz Challenge which took place at the Intercontinental Hotel on the evening of the 2nd of March.
For the second year in a row, Avolon presented Camara Education with a suite of computers and other IT equipment for use in schools and community groups in Ireland and abroad.
With support from Avolon, the U11s teams of Cabinteely Football Club have recently been able to purchase new football gear including kit, training and fitness equipment to support the development of young players in the local community around Cabinteely, Co. Dublin.
In January 2015, Avolon partnered with Camara Education to provide Camara’s first solar powered computer lab in Ethiopia.
In December 2015, Avolon partnered with the Dublin International Piano Committee (DIPC) to further the DIPC’s “Music – A Key to Another World” Program, launched in 2015.
Following on the success of last year’s inaugural Christmas Toy Appeal, Avolon was once again delighted to participate in a Christmas charity appeal in lieu of an inter-office Secret Santa.
In December 2015, Avolon donated €10,000 to GOAL in aid of their Syria Refugee program. Avolon employees attended a discussion on Syria in NYC with Goal’s USA CEO, Mark Bartolini on December 3rd.
On the morning of 4 December 2015, the Avolon Legal Team set their alarms, packed up their blenders and tupperware and made their way to Ronald McDonald House to take part in its Cooking4Families programme. Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation for families of seriously ill children undergoing treatment at Crumlin Hospital in Dublin.
In June 2013, Nathan Kirwan severed his spinal cord in a fall that resulted in a C4 injury which left him paralysed from the chest down. Following the completion of his rehab, Nathan realised that there was no motivating venue where people with disabilities could participate in exercise programmes.
In November 2015, for the third time, a team of 9 travelled to the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, to take part in the Great Ethiopian Run in aid of Orbis Ireland.
On 5th November, 2015 Avolon and Clifford Chance hosted their fifth event in Hong Kong in aid of ORBIS.
On 4th November, the Barretstown Corporate Quiz took place in the Convention Centre, Dublin, to raise much needed funds for the provision of specially designed camps and programmes for children living with a serious illness.
On Friday 23rd October, guests were invited to join Dómhnal Slattery, Chief Executive Officer of Avolon, Mick O’Dea RHA President and Patrick T. Murphy, RHA Director for the launch of the Avolon Global Studio and Avolon Youthreach Programme at the RHA.
The AWARE 30th Anniversary Ball took place in the Doubletree Hilton, Dublin on 3rd October 2015. Avolon was represented on the night by Neil Murphy and Brendan Sinnott along with their family and friends on the night.
On September 22nd, the Avolon team participated in their first ever CARE Day. The Avolon CARE Day is the hallmark of the “A” pillar CARE Initiative, and it allows the entire company to devote a day to making a hands-on difference in the community.
On September 21st, Avolon participated in Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning for the second year running raising over €3,000 in the process through a staff bake sale, raffle, wine tasting and general donations.
In response to the humanitarian crisis facing thousands of Syrian refugees making their way across European borders, Avolon arranged a collection of essential items for use in the most affected areas.
On a sunny September day, Avolon staff took part in the StructureTone Charity Golf Classic to raise funds for the Sundance Kids, Michael and Ned Hickey.
Avolon was proud to be one of the key sponsors at the recent IFSC Inner City Trust Golf Outing held at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club on 7th September 2015.
On the 5th September, 10 Athletes participated in the Brittas Bay Triathlon in aid of Darndale Childcare Centre. The Darndale Belcamp Integrated Childcare Service Ltd opened in 2001 with its aim being to provide quality childcare at an affordable cost to the Darndale, Belcamp and Moatview communities, a recognised area of social deprivation.
In early September, as part of their individual Avolon CARE days, the Finance Team embarked on an adventure to build a greenhouse for the children at Barretstown in Co. Kildare.
The R.B. Memorial English School is an English Medium School in West Bengal established in January 2015 by Bharat Karki. The school was set up to provide opportunities to local children so that they can avail of English language and IT skills currently only made available to affluent families.
Avolon has donated €5,000 to “Vita”, an Irish international development agency working with partners in Africa through their field offices in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Kenya. Vita’s programmes support communities in fighting hunger, as well as climate change.
Avolon were delighted to support the Belvedere Youth Club as part of their ongoing fundraising needs over the coming years.
Avolon were delighted to support the Donegal Hospice and Temple Street Children’s Hospital by contributing €1,500 towards the Splash & Dash event on August 1st.
On the 25th July, 7,000 athletes from over 177 countries gathered in Los Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games to demonstrate their incredible courage, unwavering determination and sheer joy by representing their country on the world stage. Special Olympics Ireland was represented at these iconic Games by 88 courageous athletes selected from across the country.
In early July 2015, the Finance Team launched two initiatives for Avolon staff. The first initiative was to collect spare change and foreign currency from employees and to donate this money to charitable causes.
For the fourth consecutive year, Avolon participated in the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) Annual Golf Classic. This year the event was held at The Castle GC on the 5th of June, with Gareth Halpin, Stephen O’Flanagan and Aidan Bodkin playing on behalf of Avolon.
On June 4, thirteen Avolon TRIBE members attended the inaugural Dublin Aviation Air Ball. The Air Ball transformed the RDS into a 1960s-themed aviation industry charity event benefitting the Darndale Belcamp Integrated Childcare Center.
On one of the wettest and windiest Irish “summer” days, six female staff members took part in the Dublin VHI Women’s Mini Marathon on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
For the second year in a row, Avolon has sponsored the Dalkey Rowing Club in the summer rowing leagues. Dalkey Rowing Club has been in existence since 1931 and remains one of the oldest coastal rowing organizations in Ireland.

In honour of International Women’s Day on March 6th, Avolon sponsored a table for 10 staff members at the annual luncheon in aid of An Cosán.
In true Avolon TRIBE spirit, this year saw another great response to the RBS 6 Nations Tribe League with a total of 42 entrants. Participants paid a fee to enter the league and battled their rugby selection skills for the 5 games of the tournament.
For the third consecutive year, Avolon participated in the Corporate Quiz Challenge in aid of The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) held at the Intercontinental Hotel on February 26th.
In December 2014, in lieu of holding a Secret Santa, Avolon staff donated arts and craft supplies and raised a total of €3,180 for the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.
On the 12 November, 2014, a team from Avolon completed the 5km and 10km Run in the Dark on behalf of the Mark Pollock Trust.
On 6th November, 2014 Avolon and Clifford Chance hosted their forth event in Hong Kong in aid of Orbis.
In 2014, eleven of the Avolon team committed to taking part in the Great Ethiopian Run on behalf of Orbis Ireland.
On 18 September, several members of staff in the Avolon Dublin office put their baking skills to the test and participated in Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning raising over €2,000 in aid of the local Blackrock Hospice.
On Saturday the 19th of July five members of the Avolon team completed the TriGrandPrix Triathlon in Kilkenny, supporting both the official charity partner Cycle against Suicide and Avolon’s chosen charity partner the Darndale Childcare centre.
Avolon continues to support the Run in the Dark event renewing their official sponsorship for a second year.
On 8 December 2013, fourteen members of the Avolon team completed a 10km hike in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow.
On the 13 November, 2013, a team from Avolon completed the Run in the Dark on behalf of the Mark Pollock Trust. In total over 13,000 runners participated in the event in cities around the world, with a team of 15 representing Avolon at the flagship event in Dublin.
On 7th November, 2013 Avolon and Clifford Chance hosted their third event in Hong Kong in aid of ORBIS.

On 25 November 2012, 11 members of the Avolon team completed The Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa to raise funds for ORBIS Ireland.
