[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]On 25 November 2012, 11 members of the Avolon team completed The Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa to raise funds for ORBIS Ireland. Over 36,000 people took to the streets to participate in Africa’s biggest road race – a challenging 10km at 10,000 feet above sea level. We are glad to report that everyone crossed the finish line without the need for oxygen tanks or medical assistance!!!

n addition to the run, the Avolon team visited Menelik II Hospital and had the opportunity to experience first hand the invaluable work undertaken by ORBIS. They were moved by the positive benefit on the lives of so many Ethiopians, many of whom might otherwise suffer long-term eye damage or blindness from a wholly treatable disease.

Avolon’s fundraising target for the event was €33,000. Thanks to the generosity of Avolon’s clients, business partners and friends, and the hard work of the team, Avolon raised over €40,000.

Dómhnal Slattery, CEO of Avolon commented “This was a life changing experience for all of us and a huge thank you to all who supported the fundraising efforts. It is much appreciated by our team but more importantly by ORBIS Ireland and all of the people they will help with eye disease in Ethiopia.”

ORBIS is an international charity dedicated to the treatment and prevention of blindness in the developing world and, since it was founded in 1982, ORBIS has worked tirelessly to achieve its goal. With a focus on teaching and training ORBIS has carried out more than 1,000 sight-saving programmes and treated more than 15 million people worldwide.

ORBIS Ireland was established in 2005 and is currently focused on one major project; to eliminate a highly prevalent and life destroying, blinding disease – trachoma – in some of the poorest regions of southern Ethiopia.
