Avolon contribute €1,500 towards Splash & Dash in aid of Donegal Hospice and the Temple Street Children’s Hospital Avolon were delighted to support the Donegal Hospice and Temple Street Children’s Hospital by contributing €1,500 towards the Splash & Dash event on August 1st. Splash Dash is a 6km land, beach and sea obstacle course for adults together with a mini 2km junior dash for kids that takes place in Donegal each year. The event was created and designed by Deirdre Ward as a way to show her appreciation of the care and support shown by the staff of the Donegal Hospice towards her late mother Anna Ward. This year, the proceeds raised for the event were split between the Donegal Hospice and the Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The Donegal Hospice provides a broad range of services including Hospice Care, Home Care and Day Care. Day running of the hospice and the hospice support movement works in partnership with the HSE. The support group is responsible for providing up to 20% of the annual running cost of the facility at Knocknamona which is quite a challenge to meet every year. In conjunction with the HSE, a five year plan for palliative care has been developed which includes a major extension of Donegal Hospice. The development will enable service to be increased by approximately 50% which will in turn require additional staff from all disciplines. Temple Street, founded in 1872 is an acute paediatric hospital serving some of Ireland’s sickest children and providing a referral and care service on both a regional and national basis.  Seven major specialities at Temple Street today include neonatal and paediatric surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, orthopaedics, ENT and plastic surgery. The Hospital is also the national centre for paediatric ophthalmology, the national craniofacial centre, the national airway management centre, the national meninogococal laboratory, the national centre for inherited metabolic disorders and the national screening centre. Temple Street cares for 145,000 children per year. Over 45,000 of these children attend the Emergency Department every year making it one of the busiest in Europe. A staff of 85 Consultants and over 950 other full time and part time nursing, paramedical and other staff deliver care.
