The charity is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of blindness in the developing world. With over 120 people in attendance, the event raised circa US$110,000 which will be donated to the charity’s Ethiopian project. Avolon would like to thank ORBIS, its co-sponsors and all our guests for their support of this worthy cause. The funds raised from the Avolon and Clifford Chance Dinner help to improve basic eye care in rural areas like Gama Gofa, Derashe and Konso in southern Ethiopia. Together we are completely transforming this region by eliminating the blinding eye disease – trachoma – from this region of two million people who are among the country’s poorest and worst affected by avoidable blindness.  The impact of the Avolon and Clifford Chance Dinner is far-reaching and allows ORBIS to continue freeing people from the threat of avoidable blindness. Project update:

  • The impact of Orbis is staggering: In 2007, the prevalence of trachoma in this region was as high as 60%. In 2016, the prevalence is as low as 0.4%! The World Health Organisation states that trachoma has been eliminated when the prevalence is below 5%. One million people now live in areas which are free from trachoma infection.
  • Ethiopia is now viewed as an inspirational example of what can be achieved with support from organisations like Orbis who work with governments and communities to improve basic health care.
  • Orbis are on the brink of achieving something significant - eliminating trachoma! They plan to scale up programmes and strengthen health systems to ensure the poorest people, those most affected by trachoma, are not left behind
  • In 2016 Orbis launched our next generation Flying Eye Hospital. The world’s only Flying Eye Hospital is the result of a unique and lasting alliance forged between the medical and aviation industries. Orbis specially designed and converted MD-10 aircraft makes it possible for them to bring ophthalmic training to communities throughout the world. Orbis plans to bring the new aircraft to Dublin in March 2017.
Members of the Avolon team have been involved with ORBIS since 2002 and have seen first-hand the difference they make with their work, saving over 300,000 people in developing countries from unnecessary sight loss each year.  ORBIS provides the tools, training and technology for local eye doctors and health care workers to develop solutions to tackle avoidable blindness in Ethiopia. By strengthening eye care institutions, ORBIS helps its partners to provide long-term, quality eye care services that are affordable, accessible and sustainable.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_gallery type="image_grid" images="5707,5708,5710,5711,5712,5713,5714,5715,5716,5717,5718,5719,5720,5721,5722,5723,5724,5725,5726,5727,5728,5729,5730,5731,5732,5733,5734,5735,5736,5737,5738,5739,5740" img_size="130x87" el_class="jvGallery"][/vc_column][/vc_row]
